Abstract
John Shaw examines the early years of James Garfield’s marriage to Lucretia Rudolph. Using Garfield’s personal correspondence as corroborating evidence, the author proposes “that whatever the lure of politics might have been, or the excitement of a command in the Civil War, what propelled Garfield into the world of larger affairs, away from Hiram, was at first his unhappy marriage”. Conference paper; originally published in Western Reserve Studies Symposium (11th: 1996: Cleveland, Ohio).
