Abstract

The courses within the Operations Research Department were classified into one of four major fields (i.e., Optimization Theory, Stochastic Systems Behavior, Information Processing, and Research and Development). Courses within a field must usually be taken in a pre-defined order. However, since those in different categories are almost independent, and those in Research and Development (R&D) do not usually require specific prerequisites, one can consider three independent oriented networks. These are used to design the average schedule which draws from each course category. The programs of study of 50 randomly selected students registered in the Department between Fall 1967 and Fall 1969 were obtained and analyzed. All computations take in account mean values, and the results are later expanded to include special situations. The report is divided into four parts. The first one analyzes the various academic requirements (of different student types) and attempts to simplify the procedures while motivating practical rules for program design. The second chapter contains a description of the Operations Research courses (i.e., its "resources"). These are ranked so that a program of study can be developed in each category (independent-ly of the others). Chapter III explains the procedures of previous semesters. The final section exhibits typical (student)programs, developed on the basis of the previous chapters, and also contains some relevant statistics (e.g., expected course sizes).
