Abstract
In the post industrial era, human capital is known to be the most vital source of economic growth. It is developed in many ways. The most obvious of which is by means of formal education and research, especially higher education and organized research. This thesis first develops a methodology for analyzing the contributions of higher education and research and development to economic growth. The methodology is based on economic theory of production and technical change. The transcendental logarithmic production function was employed for the model. The methodology was then empirically tested and evaluated based on 1955 to 1983 time series data for the United States economy.
