Abstract
Today, the products of industrial research are visible everywhere. Moreover, the activity of industrial research is viewed as basic to a company's and indeed a country's continuing economic development. Industrial research has become such an important enterprize that it has itself become the subject of extensive studies for which Project Themis is a recent example. Moreover, the impact of all research is so profound that in many quarters it is taken for granted. Yet, this situation was not always the case. Historically, industrial research as practiced today is a relatively modern development having taken place within the last century. It is the intent of this paper to briefly trace its evolution.
