Abstract
This paper reports on the nature of patient services and the essential role which scheduling may play in improving the effectiveness and efficiency of such services. Hospitals and nursing home facilities must routinely provide a broad spectrum of services promptly at times they are needed by their patients. Service demands for individual patients should be coordinated with the vocal immediate and longer term needs of the patient, under conditions which allow for suitable balance between the individual patient's needs and the priorities necessary for staff personnel to properly fulfill their broader patient and institutional service responsibilities.
