Abstract
This paper reviews necessary and desirable characteristics of faculty, as suggested by both their peers and their students. Several surveys of student opinion regarding their teachers are discussed, along with problems of various rating methods. Two faculty rating models are described, though again with admitted shortcomings. A synthesized, viable scoring model for evaluating faculty members for promotion is proposed, and is followed by extensions of this to other educational institution uses.
