Abstract
This paper explores the development and application of a planning method for research studies, addressing the limitations of conventional project management tools like CPM and PERT in handling the uncertainties inherent in research processes. A research study is modeled as a sequential acquisition of knowledge, represented by a stochastic network of events (knowledge levels) and activities (tasks). The stochastic nature of the network incorporates probabilistic parameters such as success likelihood, estimated costs, and expected time, which are periodically updated by researchers. Decision models are proposed to optimize task sequencing, alternative selection, and funding allocation, with criteria emphasizing cost minimization and success probability maximization. The approach adapts dynamically to the evolving structure of research activities.
