Abstract

This paper discusses a study used to establish tradeoffs between the number of full-time registered nurses required to deliver safe nursing care in a 20-bed medical intensive care unit and the percentage of days a given planned staffing level will result in over and under staffing. Retrospective patient load and mix data were collected for a one-year period. These data were curve-fitted for each of four seasons and used in a computer-based simulation to obtain the staffing tradeoff tables.
