Abstract

This report provides a foundation for designing a management information system (MIS) for industrial research and development (R&D) operations. The study, based on published research and interviews with personnel at various management levels in an R&D center, examines the objectives of corporate R&D activities and associated functions. It identifies the information requirements for each management level and analyzes the flow of information between system elements. The report explores general principles and operational challenges of MIS implementation and evaluates specific issues regarding project progress and value. Recommendations are presented to guide the design and optimization of management information systems for industrial R&D environments.
