Abstract
The literature includes numerous workforce scheduling models, most of which are special cases or minor variations of the landmark Burns and Carter (BC) model. Some, however, extend the BC model significantly. This paper presents a taxonomy of workforce scheduling methodologies and classifies the majority of contributions to date. The classification highlights both the similarities and differences among the various approaches and identifies gaps in the literature. These gaps represent potential areas for further research.
