Abstract
This paper investigates the preventive maintenance scheduling problem in an M/M/1 system. The trade-off between the cost of breakdown, the cost of waiting, and the cost of maintenance are examined. A number of insightful propositions are established and the boundary conditions of the optimal frequency of maintenance analyzed.
